Zebra Mussels

In late 2021, Gulf Coast Water Authority (GCWA) discovered zebra mussels in the Texas City Reservoir.  Zebra mussels are an invasive species to the American freshwater ways (including Texas).  The mussels can severely impact infrastructure (i.e., clogging of lines and pumps, and increased energy costs) and water quality if left unaddressed.  GCWA has conducted site surveys throughout the system (both within the canals and at the plants) and, to the best of our knowledge, the mussels appear to be contained to the reservoir.  GCWA is forming a stakeholders forum to continue discussing the issue of zebra mussels and treatment strategies with our customers and users.  If you would like to receive updated information on the forum or if you think you have spotted zebra mussels within our system, please click the link below.
